Silicon Valley June Monthly Lunch: Professor Robert Grubbs - "Chemistry-Driven Innovations in Materials for Healthcare"
Regular price $ 20.00

About the Event

The diverse nature of chemistry allows us to develop new ways of treating disease with better materials.

For example, olefin metathesis is recognized as a significant step forward in ‘green chemistry,’ where the chemical processes are much more effective and environmentally sound because they require less starting material and less energy, and generate less waste (particularly less hazardous waste) and fewer byproducts.

Further, simple materials chemistry is made possible by recent developments in synthetic strategies and techniques that go beyond applications in pharmaceuticals. To illustrate, with such chemistry, we have developed light-adjustable intraocular lenses.

My talk will discuss these technologies. They will greatly impact healthcare costs by introducing alternatives to long-term treatment.

Professor Grubbs is the Victor and Elizabeth Atkins Professor of Chemistry at Caltech, where he has been a faculty member since 1978. In 2005, Bob was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for contributions to the field of olefin metathesis.
