About the Panelists
Bill Davidow has been a high-technology industry executive and a venture investor for more than 30 years. He continues to act as an active advisor to Mohr Davidow Ventures, a venture capital firm. Davidow is the author of Marketing High Technologyand a co-author of Total Customer Serviceand The Virtual Corporation.
While at Intel, Bill served as senior vice president of marketing and sales, vice president of the microcomputer division and vice president of the microcomputer systems division. Prior to Intel Corp., Bill worked in various managerial positions at Hewlett Packard and General Electric. Bill’s community involvement extends to serving on the boards of California Institute of Technology and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He also sits on the Foundation Board of the University of California, San Francisco, and on the Board of the California Nature Conservancy.
Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Dartmouth College, a master’s degree in electrical engineering from both Dartmouth College and the California Institute of Technology, and a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
Walter joined Summit Partners in 1989. Over a 30-year venture capital career, he has served as a director of over 50 companies, including many public companies.
Walter has invested in several industry-defining companies, notably E-TEK Dynamics (NASDAQ: ETEK, later merged with JDS Uniphase in a transaction valued at over $18 billion), an early leader in optical networking; as the initial investor in McAfee (NYSE: MFE, later acquired by Intel), an anti-virus and network security firm and one of the pioneering companies using the Internetbusiness model for distributing software; and HMT Technology (NASDAQ: HMTT, later acquired by Komag) and Diamond Multimedia Systems (NASDAQ: DIMD, later acquired by SONICblue), both early technology buyout and recapitalization transactions in Silicon Valley. Other notable technology investments include AltoCom (acquired by Broadcom), Finisar (NASDAQ: FNSR), NetCom Systems (acquired by Bowthorpe), and Xylan (NASDAQ: XYLN, later acquired by Alcatel). He is currently an active private investor and advisor to a number of promising start-up technology companies.
Prior to Summit, Walter was a Vice President and Associate at Crosspoint Venture Partners and a software engineer in the computer graphics field. He received a BS in engineering, with Honors, from Oregon State University, an MS in engineering from Caltech, and an MBA from UCLA.
Walter has consistently appeared on the Forbes Midas List and is a member of the Board of Trustees at Caltech. He is a founder and advisory board member of the Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity at the University of Southern California and a past director of the National Venture Capital Association.
