Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) in Commercial Aviation

Rhonda Walthall

Manager of Prognostics and Health Management, UTC Aerospace Systems

The role of IVHM has evolved from its origins in Reliability-Centered Maintenance, where only a few dozen parameters were available to assess the health of the main engines, to today, where the 787 is capable of recording over 100,000 parameters. This massive expansion in available data has enabled aircraft systems, such as the electric power system and the air management system, to be monitored and assessed for current and future health states. Predictive analytics are used to estimate the prognostic horizon, the time at which a component is likely to fail, so that preventative maintenance can be performed to avoid a Service Interruption. Tomorrow’s aircraft will be equipped with many more health ready components, capable of reporting data or assessing their own health. This rapid expansion of data, recorded at very high frequencies, will drive Big Data Analytics to the aircraft level and will revolutionize how data is used to support Airline Operations. This presentation will explore the concept of IVHM, the evolution to Big Data Analytics, and the impact to the Airlines.
