Cultural and Culinary Tour of the Amalfi Coast in Italy

with Tom Mannion
Senior Director, Student Activities and Programs
(and noted Caltech chef!)

We set out to plan a special itinerary for the Caltech Alumni Association that combines beautiful walks with an emphasis on the cooking and culinary traditions of the Amalfi peninsula. Imagine settling into a lovely hotel in a fishing village on the steep and sunny coastline, taking walks that reveal Positano, Ravello, the Isle of Capri, and even Pompeii. Enjoy the seafood, fresh fruits and cheeses. Like a great Italian meal, this week is a long, happy, satisfying event that
you'll wish would never end.

We will be joined by Tom Mannion, Senior Director Student Activities and Programs and instructor of one of Caltech’s most popular classes: PA-16 Cooking Basics (a survey of cooking and food science) and two current students. Enjoy getting to know Tom and our students and exchange stories about life at Caltech.

Tom Mannion
Senior Director, Student Activities and Programs
Tom Mannion joined Caltech in 1993. In 2003, Mannion started the class PA-16 Cooking Basics (a survey of cooking and food science). This class is often referred to as the most popular elective class on campus. Mannion also organizes student events, pranks, clubs, leadership development and many other areas of student life. Mannion received his BA and did Masters work in International Relations at The George Washington University. He has earned certificates from the Culinary Institute of America in Wine; wine and food pairing; Mediterranean Cuisine; American Bounty; and Sauces, Stocks and Oils. His work has been featured on CNN and all local networks as well as in Newsweek, Reuters, NPR and newspapers across the country. During an interview with Pat Morrison of NPR, Stephen Hawking (cooking class regular) rated Mannion’s food 2 Michelin stars.

DAY 1 - Mt. Vesuvius

We meet in Naples at our hotel overlooking the bay and the fortress. From here, we make a short journey to Mt. Vesuvius. The famed volcano towers over the region, a constant reminder of the eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. We head for Vesuvius' slopes and a walk around the scenic rim of the crater. From this high lookout, we have amazing views along the curve of the Gulf of Naples and spectacular lava flows that course through forests of oak and Mediterranean pines. We can also pick out the islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri that lay just off the coast.

Later in the afternoon, we return to our hotel, rated as one of the best hotels in the city, for some time to relax before our festive

DAYS 2-3 - CAPRI

After a breakfast of local specialties, we leave Naples on a quick hydrofoil (called an aliscafo here) to Capri, probably the most famous island in the western world. Capri is renowned as a sanctuary for the famous and wealthy from around the world, and magnificent yachts anchor in its lovely bays and coves. For us, our two days here offer the unparalleled opportunity to live like the locals, wandering its photogenic and quiet cobblestone lanes, shopping in its world famous boutiques and elegant shops.

DAYS 4 - POSITANO 

Fortified by cappuccino and a very Mediterranean breakfast of seasonal fruit, warm breads and local cheeses on Capri, an aliscafo whisks us back to the mainland this morning. We journey along the scenic Bay of Naples, leading us to our cliffside home in Positano.
